Stockholm - East Timorese independence leader Mr Xanana Gusmao said yesterday he would not be a candidate to be the first president of his country. "I am not going to run for president . . . we must sever the future from the past," he told a news conference in Stockholm, where Sweden announced 40 million Swedish crowns (£5.84 million) in aid to help an independent administration. Mr Gusmao said East Timor badly needed leadership, but the time to find fresh faces would be when a democratic administration was in place.
