Groups which do not remove offending items by this date face prosecution under the Litter Pollution Act 1997, the Department of Environment said.

Mr Kevin O'Sullivan of Dublin City Council said if posters had to be removed by the Council groups would be followed up and prosecuted. Checks would begin first thing on Thursday morning next, he said.

Under the law, fines of up to €1,904 or on-the-spot fines of €125 can be imposed under Section 19 of the Litter Pollution Act.

A Fianna Fáil spokesman said the party had "commenced the process of taking them down and we hope to have that completed at the earliest opportunity".

Asked when his group would be removing the posters Mr Brendan Young of the Alliance for a No Vote (ANV) said: "when we have the energy".

"We will be meeting early next week when this will be decided", he added.

ANV put up 2,000 posters around the Republic, calling for the rejection of the Government's proposal to amend the Constitution, at a cost of €5,500.
