The Government is expected to respond today to a list of 40 questions posed by Fine Gael on the abortion referendum proposals.

These questions were initially presented by Fine Gael health spokesman Mr Gay Mitchell to a meeting of Fine Gael TDs and senators yesterday.

Mr Mitchell said the Protection of Human Life in Pregnancy Bill was lacking in that its content and intention remained unclear.

The TDs and senators decided to back their leadership's policy of questioning the Government's abortion proposals.

However, a conclusive stance on the issue was not decided, with deputies voting to decide their position after the initial discussion of the bill in the Oireachtas.
