The Morris tribunal has heard that Ms Adrienne McGlinchey was found with two marked maps when she was stopped by gardaí in October 1990.

Det Sgt Hugh Smith said he and Det Garda Matthew Tolan stopped Ms McGlinchey after her car "shot across" them and went up a side road. When they searched the car, they found a map of Derry city. A map of the Donegal/Derry Border region had an "X" marked on a location. Ms McGlinchey appeared to be "nervous, and worried and agitated" when the maps were found.

She said she did not know what the maps signified - she was just carrying them from Strabane to Rahan. Known Republicans frequented a house in Rahan and an earlier Garda witness told the tribunal that "hardened terrorists" stayed there. Det Sgt Smith said Ms McGlinchey was also to give the message that "the party was off for a week", or something to that effect. Ms McGlinchey allowed the detectives to take the maps away to be photocopied but said she would be in trouble if she did not deliver them. Mr Anthony Barr BL, for the tribunal, asked if Ms McGlinchey had brought the Garda notice onto herself by cutting across in front of them. "Well, it did attract our attention," he said.

Ms McGlinchey has claimed the maps were marked for canoeing purposes. Det Sgt Smith said he could not recall any rivers or waterways at the marked locations. He and Det Garda Tolan also told the tribunal about Ms McGlinchey's promise to show them a gun taken from an RUC man and kept in an attic in Ballyshannon.

The detectives drove her to Ballyshannon to retrieve the gun. She produced a small bottle of vodka and got drunk on the way.

When they arrived in the town, she disappeared for ten minutes and returned, saying she could not get the gun because a certain person was in the flat.
