Gardai investigating the killing of an arcade manager, Mr John Kennedy (50), say they are now following "a definite line of inquiry". Their three-week-old investigation received a major boost earlier this week when they found some of the money taken from the arcade in Ballinasloe, Co Galway, on the night of the killing.

Gardai are now convinced that Mr Kennedy, a bachelor, was probably killed by somebody from the locality.

They are known to be anxious to talk to one local man who is understood to be outside the jurisdiction. Mr Kennedy died from several blows to the head, probably inflicted with a blunt instrument such as a hammer.

Gardai are still searching for a murder weapon.
