Residents of a street in inner-city Dublin had to be evacuated from their homes when a grenade was thrown at the wall of a house.

The device exploded shortly before midnight on Tuesday at Park Terrace, between Meath Street and Francis Street in the Coombe area of Dublin. Gardaí are now investigating whether the grenade is linked to a feud between a former INLA man and rivals in the area. They also fear there may be a retaliatory attack.

More than 100 residents were evacuated when a call to the Samaritans revealed that other explosives were left in the area.

Officers carried out a detailed search and a suspicious bag was found in a nearby apartment complex. "An Army EOD [Explosive Ordnance Disposal] team were called and they carried out a controlled explosion. It is believed there were no explosives in the bag and it is not connected to the first incident," a Garda spokes- man said. It is the second attack in recent days involving an explosive device in Dublin. A pipe bomb was thrown from a car in the Mulhuddart area of west Dublin early on Monday morning.
