Gardaí have appealed to the public for help over a collision between a car and a truck on the main Cork-Dublin road yesterday in which a woman in her 60s was killed.
The woman was a rear seat passenger in a car heading south towards the Watergrasshill toll plaza on the N8 when it hit a truck travelling in the same direction just before 6.30am.
The woman and three other people in the car, two women and a man believed to be in their 20s and 30s, were all taken by ambulances to Cork University Hospital. The woman died there later of her injuries.
It is understood all four were Polish nationals. The woman who died had been visiting relatives in Portlaoise and was on her way to Cork Airport to return home at the time.
The driver of the truck, a Polish national in his 30s, was uninjured in the collision but was said to be badly shaken and was treated for shock at the scene.
Separately, a 21-year-old woman was killed in a two-car collision on Fota Road near Cobh, Co Cork, at about 9pm last night. Several other people were injured and taken to Cork University Hospital.
