A four-year-old boy died last night after being swept out to sea by a freak wave while walking with his family near a popular Co Antrim beauty spot. The child was plucked from the sea by an air rescue team at Giant's Causeway after desperate attempts by his father and uncle to save him. But he was dead on arrival at Coleraine Hospital.
The tragedy happened at about 6.30 p.m. as the child and his six-year-old brother were out walking in the popular beauty spot. Both children fell into the rough seas. Their father and uncle rushed into the water and managed to pull the six-year-old to safety. The four-year-old was plucked from the water an hour later after a massive sea and air rescue operation. The survivors were detained in hospital.
