About 40 people, including an entire soccer team, are missing after a boat sank off Madagascar.

Rescue services were searching for them after the boat began sinking in bad weather off the Indian Ocean islandyesterday.

The crew managed to send a distress signal before the vessel went down.

The ship was en route from Toamasina on the east of the island to Maroantsetra, roughly 300 km (190 miles) to the north.

Among the missing were 16 footballers, 11 passengers, five dock workers and eight crew, state radio said.
