At least five people were killed and 20 injured in the Afghan capital Kabul today by a strong earthquake centred in the Hindu Kush mountain range to the north, a spokesman for the Information Ministry said.

At least 30 houses collapsed or were badly damaged, the spokesman said.

The quake, which the US Geological Survey said measured 7.2 on the Richter scale, was felt as far away as the Pakistani capital Islamabad and the Indian capital New Delhi.

The tremor lasted for about 90 seconds.
