Emergency services came under attack last night in what the Dublin Fire Brigade said was a busy night for its crews.

Between 6pm yesterday and 5am, there were 212 ambulance cases, five house fires and 22 car fires. Nineteen other fires were reported, but there were no significant injuries in the blazes.

"It was busier than normal, and it's getting worse," a spokesman for the Dublin Fire Brigade said.

It was while responding to three emergency calls relating to car fires in the Finglas and Cherry Orchard areas of Dublin that crews came under attack. Fire officers escaped without injury.

There were also two serious car accidents reported and a number of stabbings.
