Met Éireann issues low temperature warning

Temperatures forecast to drop as low as minus 5 degrees nationwide on Sunday night

Don’t pack away the thermals yet, more snow is on the way this week....

Met Éireann is forecasting another week of wintery conditions, with further outbreaks of rain, sleet and snow expected on Monday night.

Up to 5cm of snow is forecast to fall in some places by Tuesday morning while temperatures in Ulster could fall to - 7 degrees in snowy areas.

On Wednesday there will be rain, sleet and snow showers on the west and north coasts, pushing further inland at times, but it will be mainly dry elsewhere.

Met Éireann said early indications suggest it will become less cold for Friday and the weekend but unsettled with rain or showers at times.

A yellow alert is in place for this evening, as temperatures plunge again to as low as -5C.

Met Éireann has issued a weather warning with temperatures predicted to fall as low as minus 5 degrees on Sunday night.

The yellow weather warning is in place until 10am on Monday.

There will be severe frost overnight and untreated road surfaces and paths will accumulate ice, making them slippy and dangerous.

Patches of freezing fog may also occur.

Motorists are advised to slow down, take extra care and remember stopping distances are ten times longer in snow and ice.

Extreme care is needed on some roads around Monaghan town and driving conditions remain poor due to frost and ice around Glenties and Ardara in Co Donegal. Conditions are very bad on the N56 Donegal Coast Road.

The N21 Limerick/ Killarney Road is closed southbound at Castleisland due to ice. Diversions are in place through Castleisland town.

It is very icy between Tralee and Killarney on the N22 Cork/Kerry Road particularly at Flemby. There are also reports of black ice on the N21 between Ballygarry Hotel, Tralee and Ballycarthy.

Icy conditions have also been reported on the N71 Killarney Road at Kenmare. Caution is advised. It’s also reportedly very slippery on the N70 between Sneem and Kenmare.

The cold snap is set to last until Wednesday with severe night frosts and wintry showers of hail, sleet and snow.

Meteorologist Joanna Donnelly said weather warnings are issued on a day-to-day basis and it was likely to stay “very cold” for the next week.

Forecasters have said it looked like it will become less cold and unsettled towards the end of next week.
