ESB produces illustration showing how river works from Lough Allen to Parteen Weir

The ebbs and flows of the Shannon river have been headline news since Storm Desmond hit causing widespread flooding in surrounding areas.

There has been much written about controlling water discharge at the Parteen Weir , relieving flooding on Lough Derg and the use of the river at Ardnacrusha power station.

For those of us still confused about the hows and whys of our longest river, the ESB has produced this inphographic to explain how it all works.

It runs from where the river rises in Co Cavan to where it ends after 260km at the Shannon Estuary in Co Limerick
