THE RINGLEADER plastics recycling project for primary schools is seeking interested teachers to participate in the 1996/97 project. Ringleader, which is a joint initiative by Blackrock Teachers Centre, Dublin, the Plastics Industry Association and ITW Hi Cone, Mallow, Co Cork, encourages schools to recycle the plastic ring can and bottle carriers for food and beverage multipacks.
In 1995, a pilot project in the south Dublin area involved 20 schools and 600 pupils. Last year, 100 schools in Dublin, Cork and Limerick participated; the target for 1997 is 200 schools in Dublin, Cork, Limerick and Waterford. Schools will be selected in November and teacher training offered.
A local co-ordinator will visit each participating school in December. Classwork will take place between December 1996 and March 1997.
Schools are supplied with a series of project cards which guide them through the project and provides information on plastic and packaging. The project is aimed at fifth class and can be incorporated into the school's social, scientific and environmental-studies curriculum.
Completion certificates will be issued and prizes will be awarded for the best project and for the most material collected.
Interested teachers should contact Eanna Ni Lamhna at Blackrock Teachers' Centre.
