THE NUMBER of pupils opting for Transition Year next September is likely to exceed 27,500, the largest number ever. An evaluation of Transition Year, published by the Department of Education in February, shows that 89 per cent of schools are following the Transition Year Programme guidelines in a satisfactory manner. Its recommendations include a reminder that schools are not permitted to offer a three-year Leaving Certificate programme. The evaluation also recommends a whole school approach, more attention to interdisciplinary work and subject choice to be delayed until the end of Transition Year.
