AN AMERICAN company has donated computer training software with a market value of $1 million to Limerick RTC and to the University of Limerick.

Gartner Group Learning, a developer and publisher of software education products and services, recently established a European facility at the National Technological Park in Limerick, following the acquisition of Irish owned Mindware Training Technologies Ltd. The company specialises in IT training.

Accepting the donation on behalf of Limerick RTC, Michael Guerin, head of the department of science and information technology, said the software was one of the biggest donations ever received by the college.

"With education moving more and more towards computer based learning, these products will form the basis of an electronic training centre at Limerick RTC and provide an opportunity for exploring possibilities around Internet training, Guerin said.

A similar presentation was made to UL. "Having a whole suite of computer training products to the value of $1 million at our disposal will allow us to make optimal use of academic staff time," said Professor Kevin Ryan, UL's dean of informatics. "It will also facilitate greater flexibility for students, who will now be able to schedule much of their own training," he added.
