Former Bishop of Galway Dr Eamon Casey has returned to Ireland this evening.

Former Bishop of Galway Dr Eamon Casey has returned to Ireland this evening.

Dr Casey (78) resigned as Bishop of Galway in May 1992 after it emerged he had been in a relationship with a woman since 1973. They had also had a son together. The revelations were seen as pivotal moment in the Catholic church in Ireland.

Fr Casey arrived in Dublin by ferry this evening but his immediate plans are unknown.

Fr Casey has been working in the parish of St Paul's in Staplefield, Haywards Heath, for around six years.
