DUBLIN drug addict Mr Josey Dwyer, beaten to death last month by a vigilante gang, died from severe bleeding into his abdominal cavity, an inquest has heard.

Chief State Pathologist Dr John Harbison told the Dublin Coroner's court yesterday that a blow ruptured Mr Dwyer's spleen. Mr Dwyer (41), a widower, of Basin Street, Dublin 8, died after sustaining an injury to the left side of the chest which resulted in the bleeding into his abdominal cavity.

Det Insp Declan Coburn of Kevin Street Garda station told the inquest that criminal proceedings are being considered and sought an adjournment.

Dr Brian Farrell, the Dublin City Coroner, said in the circumstances he was obliged to grant an adjournment and put the case in for mention on December 12th next.

The dead man, who had full blown AIDS, was attacked by a gang of between 15 and 20 people using sticks and an iron bar on May 14th.
