Man in court over fatal hit and run in Galway

A man appeared in court last night in connection with a fatal hit and run in Co Galway.

Antonio de Olivera (23), a restaurant worker with an address at Market Lane, Ballina, Co Mayo, was brought before a special sitting of Loughrea District Court.

The Brazilian national faces four charges arising from the fatal collision on the outskirts of Loughrea on Wednesday night.

Pensioner John White (68) was cycling on the Gort road when he was hit by a car on at about 8.40pm. He died in hospital.

The accused man had been arrested earlier yesterday. Gardaí did not oppose bail and the accused man was freed on the lodgement of an independent cash surety of €2,000.

He was remanded to appear again at Loughrea District Court on June 4th.
