Teenager accused of rape remanded on bail

A teenager accused of the rape of a female two years ago has been remanded on bail pending the preparation of a book of evidence.

The youth, now aged 18, appeared at the Dublin Children’s Court charged under section four of the Rape Amendment Act 1990.

The offence allegedly happened on a date in August 2019 in north Co Dublin, when he was aged 16.

He cannot be named for legal reasons.

The youth was granted bail to appear again in October and has been ordered to obey a curfew, surrender his passport, not leave the jurisdiction, and to have no contact with the complainant.

The Children’s Court does not have the power to consider accepting jurisdiction in a rape case.

A book of evidence must be served on him by the prosecution before he can be returned for trial to the Central Criminal Court.
