Crackdown over vehicle plates

A crackdown on the use of illegal vehicle registration plates has been announced by the Revenue. It says motorists initially encountered with non-regulation plates would be warned and advised to obtain legal plates. Failure to display the correct plate rendered the owner liable to prosecution and a penalty of £1,000 on conviction.

Registration plates are required by law to conform to certain dimensions and should bear the European Communities flag and the letter IRL on the left hand side, followed by the assigned vehicle registration number in black on a white reflective background.
