Taoiseach Brian Cowen will today walk in the St Patrick’s Day parade in the city of Chicago ahead of his visit to the White House.

Mr Cowen will attend Mass in St Patrick's Cathedral in the city, which will dye the Chicago River green for the celebrations. He will also meet local political leaders and representatives of the Irish community in the area.

Last night the Taoiseach was guest of honour at the Irish Fellowship Club of Chicago dinner, which was attended by approximately 1,000 people.

In his speech the Taoiseach reflected on the contribution of the Irish to Chicago and looked forward to a continued close relationship between Ireland and her diaspora.

"He also stressed the attractions of Ireland as a place to invest in or to visit," said a spokesman.

The Taoiseach is due to meet US vice-president Joe Biden and secretary of state Hillary Clinton during his trip to the United States.

He will then hold talks with President Barack Obama before presenting him with the traditional bowl of shamrock on Wednesday.
