A Monaghan county councillor who was the subject of a "serious incident" on an Aer Lingus flight from Dublin to Boston last week was not on his scheduled return flight with the company last night.

A spokesman for Aer Lingus said: "Cllr Hughie McElvaney has cancelled his travel arrangements with us this evening."

The spokesman said while Cllr McElvaney's behaviour had been disruptive, it had not posed a danger to the aircraft. However, it was a very serious incident. He declined to elaborate on the incident", saying it was not the company's policy to comment on a person's behaviour.

It is understood Fine Gael Cllr McElvaney's "disruptive" behaviour was radioed ahead as the jet was over Greenland. However, no steps were taken by airport police on arrival because the airline did not press charges.

Aer Lingus said it did not know how or when the councillor was returning to Ireland.

Said a family spokeswoman:

"We don't know anything about the incident except what we read in the paper. He hasn't been in touch to say anything about it. He is due home on Tuesday."

The councillor, on a five day visit to Prince Edward Island in Canada, was accompanied by four other councillors and the Monaghan county secretary, Mr Tony Murphy.
