Two months after the controversial disturbances on May Day, anti-globalisation activists are to return to the streets of Dublin today in a protest over civil liberties.
Globalise Resistance, the umbrella group for the activists, say they have called the protest at the Central Bank this afternoon in defence of civil liberties.
The group is also calling for the scrapping of the Public Order Act, which it says is being used increasingly to stifle public protest.
"Recent months have seen a major crackdown by police on the right to hold peaceful protests in Ireland. Environmental, anti-war, socialist and anti-capitalist activists have all been arrested on demonstrations," said Mr Joe Carolan of Globalise Resistance.
The Garda Complaints Board said yesterday the investigation into the May Day disturbances was "ongoing". The retired Garda assistant commissioner appointed to investigate the matter, Mr Jim McHugh, has recruited a number of former colleagues to assist in the investigation, a spokesman said.
Ten of the activists arrested at an anti-privatisation demonstration last October outside the Burlington Hotel are due to appear in Dublin District Court next Wednesday.
