The captain of the cargo ship that collided with a passenger ferry in Belfast Lough has been arrested and charged with consuming an excess amount of alcohol.

The 55-year-old captain is due to appear in court today, as an inquiry is mounted into how the accident happened.

There were initial concerns that passengers would have to abandon the Stena ferry, the Feronia, after the collision with the Union Moon cargo vessel around 7.45 pm on Wednesday night.

However, the ferry, which was travelling from Birkenhead on Merseyside to Belfast, was able to complete the final mile and a half of its journey and permission was given to disembark its 51 passengers and 47 crew, as well as vehicles.
