A call for the need to address in a more robust way the challenge of social exclusion is a common thread throughout a new book launched last night.

Taming the Tiger: Social Exclusion in a Globalised Ireland was launched by Des Geraghty, former MEP and Siptu president, in City Hall, Dublin.

The book, published by Tasc, a think tank for action on social change, is based on a recent seminar series called "Emerging from the Shadow of the Tiger" held in partnership between Tasc and NorDubCo.

Speaking at the launch of the book, director of Tasc, Paula Clancy, said the boom of the Celtic Tiger had created many changes for Ireland, from an economic, political and social perspective.

She said that according to the book, the tiger roared loudest for the middle income ranges, some manual trades as well as for professionals, but relative poverty had increased. She said the publication was an important addition to the argument for a more equal and inclusive society.
