A building labourer has been jailed for three years for assault by Dublin Circuit Criminal Court. The court heard his victim had to have a metal plate inserted into his broken cheekbone.
Judge Kieran O'Connor said Shane Hunter had acted in a "savage and brutal way" and the court could not let the matter pass without marking its disapproval. However, he said he would review the sentence on July 29th, 1996. Hunter (22), of St Martins, Kilternan, Co Dublin, pleaded guilty to assaulting Mr Rory Flanagan, at Lennox Street, Dublin, on May 21st, 1994.
Counsel said Hunter had £3,900 available as partial compensation and would raise more if ordered. He was asking the court for a six month deferment of sentence.
