Brussels airport was evacuated briefly today after a man claimed to have explosives in his luggage.

However, army bomb experts found nothing and the airport was reopened shortly afterwards.

The man, whose identity was not immediately disclosed, went to the ticket counter of Finnish airline Finnair and threatened to detonate explosives in his bag if he did not get a free ticket, a police spokeswoman said.

The departure hall of the airport was cleared while army sappers used an x-ray machine to inspect the bag, but they found nothing, she said.

The man was arrested and is in custody.
