British rail users were facing further travel misery because of fresh strikes on some of the country's busiest routes today.

South West Trains (SWT) services across southern England are affected by a 48-hour walkout by members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport union

Only a few of the 1,700 daily services were running, causing chaos for the 350,000 passengers who travel on SWT trains every day.

The company said it had offered several new pay options in talks and insisted it had met the union's pay claim in full.

In Scotland, one in four ScotRail services are cancelled because of a separate strike by train drivers over pay.
