British Prime Minister Tony Blair will fly to Washington next week to meet US President George Bush for talks on the growing crisis in Iraq.

Mr Blair will also meet UN Secretary General Kofi Annan during his visit next Thursday and Friday.

Officials in London and Washington insisted that the meeting was not an emergency summit, but indicated that the situation in Iraq would be at the top of the agenda.

The meeting comes amid growing instability in Iraq and questions over whether the transition of sovereignty to the Iraqi people can remain on track.

It was reported that the meeting was initially due to take place in June but had been moved forward.
