The Socialist Party TD, Joe Higgins, has vowed to continue his campaign against bin charges on his release from prison.

Mr Higgins was speaking after he and his Socialist Party colleage, Cllr Clare Daly, served a month-long jail sentence for disrupting local authority refuse collections.

The duo were met by their families and are due to address a public rally on the bins dispute in the Gresham Hotel, Dublin, tonight.

Mr Higgins called on local councils end their refusal to collect bins from people who have not paid their charges.

Meanwhile, local authorities are continuing to clear the refuse left uncollected as a result of this week's protests.

Dublin City Council said it hoped that bags and bins not collected last Tuesday and Wednesday would be taken away by today.
