Dr Kader Asmal, the South African government minister, has had an honorary law degree conferred upon him from Queen's University, Belfast.

Dr Asmal, a constitutional and human rights lawyer who lived in Ireland from 1963 until the collapse of the South African apartheid regime, attended Queen's yesterday for the conferring ceremony.

He said he believed the best way to make political progress in Northern Ireland was through inclusive talks without preconditions.
