A PIPE bomb thrown into a house in Co Kildare as a family was sleeping upstairs was viable and could have exploded, Garda sources have said.
Gardaí believe the incident in the village of Broadford was part of efforts to intimidate a man from assisting an inquiry into a criminal matter. The device was thrown through the window of the property around 11pm on Thursday, though it failed to explode.
Gardaí evacuated neighbouring houses and the device was made safe at the scene by Army bomb disposal experts.
