If the sewerage system in Ballisodare, Co Sligo, is not improved or replaced, large numbers of fish will be killed, according to a local fishing club.
Ballisodare Fishing Club says that the proposed sewage treatment plant for the area is badly needed, as the village population of approximately 1,800 has doubled in the last five years. "Raw sewage is going into the bay and if this continues, wild salmon will be killed," said a club spokesman.
However, the Concerned Citizens Group of Ballisodare are opposed to the proposed plant because it is near a local school and residential area. They believe it should be relocated to an industrial area.
Sligo County Council says that if the planning process is delayed the town might have to wait five years for a plant.
