LISBON - The Portuguese government yesterday approved two billion escudos (£8.7 million) of emergency aid for the Azores Islands and declared a state of calamity in the storm battered mid Atlantic archipelago.

The declaration clears the way for the islands, which were lashed by violent storms over Christmas, to seek financial help from the European Union.
