A pathway forming a complete circuit of Killarney’s largest lake is being planned, with support from various Government agencies, including Fáilte Ireland and the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, it has been confirmed.
The first part of the path, a 7km cycle and walking route along the northern shores of the lake, from Killarney town centre to Fossa, was recently completed at a cost of just under €430,000.
The lake, which contains the remains of the medieval monastic school of Inisfallen where Brian Ború reputedly studied, is right in the heart of the Killarney National Park. Much of the lands on the northern shore land are in private hands. Negotiations are now under way with those private landowners.
