Gardaí in Co Limerick are investigating a robbery at a village post office in which a gang stole a large amount of cash. The raid happened in Ballyneety, around five miles from Limerick city, yesterday evening.
Reports said that up to eight foreign nationals, including men, women and children, arrived at the post office around 5.15 p.m. and surrounded the premises. Gardaí said that the postmistress, who was taken by surprise, was threatened by the gang before they made off with an estimated €40,000.
None of the raiders appeared to be armed. A Garda source said the gang members were of Eastern European origin but added that they were not locally based.
Several of the gang members were seen leaving the scene in a green or blue Opel Vectra hatchback car with English licence plates.
Gardaí at Roxboro Road Garda station in Limerick are investigating the robbery.
