Remembering times past

This will date me, but I had some of the best nights I can remember (and some that I can't) at Bartley Dunnes. The wonderful pub was always an adventure, and when it was demolished in 1990 to make way for Break for the Border, my gelled-up hair wilted with sorrow.

Now the latest incarnation, The Grafton, harks back to even earlier times, with a 1920s inspired vibe, including art deco touches, and a décor that tends towards glitzy fun. Sign of the times

I don’t know if it’s alarmingly prescient, or simply a sign of the times, but the 1920s are having a real design moment. The style of the post-pandemic (back then it was the “Spanish flu” that had wreaked havoc), between-the-wars era is also behind the Arthaus Hotel on Dublin’s Mercer Street, a 41-bed boutique spot designed and peppered with art that celebrates the Bauhaus and its contemporaries.

Turn left
