97: BMW 6 Series – Renamed 5 Series GT hatchback is a load-lugging limo

Now, this is where things get confusing. The ‘real’ new 6 Series is actually called the 8 Series, and this 6 Series, or 6 Series GT to give it its proper name, is actually a replacement for the old 5 Series GT.

BMW has decided to change the badge number because… because reasons, we suppose. Like the old 5 GT it's basically been designed for airport limo companies, being as it's a huge, luggage-friendly hatchback, with the rear-seat legroom of a 7 Series limo but, potentially, the running costs of a mid-spec 5 Series.

Actually, when you’re driving it, it’s rather pleasant. Armchairs for seats, wafty suspension, silent running, and with the 3.0-litre six-cylinder diesel doing the work, a frankly remarkable mixture of power, refinement, and economy. But then you get out of it and realise that it’s quite elephantine in its looks, and hardly cheap to buy. Unless you really are an airport express operator, you’re better off with a 5 Series Touring (estate).
