100: Opel Grandland X – Perfectly functional but lacking personality

Top 100 cars for 2019: It should have been better given it’s based on Peugeot’s 3008, one of the best mid-sized SUVs around

Having been taken over by PSA Groupe, the car giant that also owns Peugeot and Citroen, it was inevitable that Opel would start sharing the platforms, engines, and engineering of its new French brethren.

Nothing wrong with that, you might think. After all, the Peugeot 3008 is one of the most likeable mid-size SUVs around, so an Opel-ised version should just be that, but a bit more German. Something has been lost in the translation, though, and that something is personality.

Whereas the Peugeot has striking styling on the outside, and a genuinely classy and different interior, the Grandland X just looks and feels like a taller Astra. While it’s perfectly functional, reasonably roomy, and not bad in the corners, we’re really struggling to think of a compelling reason to buy one.

Best model: Grandland X 1.2 SRI for €30,595
