Irish Consulate advises citizens to stay away from area where gunman has taken hostages

Central Sydney was in lockdown today as a number of staff and customers were taken hostage at a Lindt café in the Central Business District by an armed gunman. The emergency situation has ended in a shootout, with one hostage reported dead and the gunman shot.

The Irish consulate in Sydney has advised Irish citizens to stay away from Martin Place and the immediate surrounding area.

“You are advised to maintain a high level of vigilance, remain aware of your surroundings, including local events and to take appropriate steps to enhance your personal security. We advise that you monitor local news and media for updates,” it said in a statement.

The consulate is issuing updates on Twitter @IrelandSydney and on the Department of Foreign Affairs website.
