Playwright Seán O’Casey's former home in East Wall for €375,000

A two- to three- bedroomed terraced house refurbished last year

Hawthorn Terrace is between West Road and Church Road in East Wall in Dublin 3, and is most notable for being playwright Seán O’Casey’s home for his first 17 years, until 1897.

Inspired by a hawthorn tree that grew at the top of the street and heralded spring to O'Casey and the neighbourhood, he penned the story The Hawthorn Tree. His former residence, number 25, is a single-storey house painted magenta. The gatepost bears a plaque dedicated to O'Casey.

Number 23 looks far more low-key than its magenta neighbour. It was bought by its current owner last November for €115,250, according to the property price register. He employed his uncle, Adrian Richards of Claremont Construction, to renovate and extend the house adding a second storey to it.

Richards and his wife, interior designer Iseult, have done a fine job on the property, and his nephew is now looking for €375,000 for a very fine house of about 139sq m (1,300sq ft) through agents DNG.

Richards opened up the rear of the house to create a large, open-plan living room with an open fire. A step down takes one into the kitchen, where there is a painted kitchen with solid wood countertops and a ceramic wash-hand basin by Higginbotham of Dublin.

There is a WC to the rear of the kitchen. From the sliding patio doors in the living room there is a sizable, southwest- facing garden about 15m (50ft) long with a big shed that could be converted into a workroom, studio or playroom.

To the front of the house in what was originally the parlour there is a room the agent is calling a third bedroom but which more likely will used as a den. There is Canadian white oak flooring throughout.

Upstairs there are two good- sized double bedrooms that do not have any storage. There is also a small, sloping roofed space not big enough to be called a room under building regulations but which could be used as an office or a nursery.

The house has a fine family bathroom with a separate shower and bath.

There is off-street parking for one car.
