Seven sideboards that will suit any living space

1. Sci-fi piece with geodic form

The sideboard is one of Roche Bobois's signature pieces so much so that last year it commissioned the limited edition Zephyrus, a sci-fi looking piece with a geodic form designed by architect of note, Giacomo Garziano. Made of lacquered MDF, just 55 were made and it carried the premium price tag of €18,920. Pictured is the brand's new Scala design, part of a 2018 collection by Bina Baitel, another name to watch, who wanted to create a sense of movement in cabinets – a smart move as sideboards can often look boringly static. 2. Shades of sea-green

Shade is a sideboard designed by Giuseppe Vigano for Italian brand Bonaldo and launched at the Milan Fair last April. The design has a light and elegant metal base frame, in copper, brass or painted grey metal finishes. The cabinet has bevelled side doors, lacquered in a sea-green shade with a printed decorative pattern on the door fronts. It comes in two lengths, 170cm and 230cm, ideal for larger rooms. 3. Early morning spring pastels

US designer Jonathan Adler mixes Italian modern with Danish design for a look that is beyond his usual Hollywood regency. Called Avant, this sideboard reimagines a simple drawered structure as if wearing a Harlequin costume bedecked in early morning spring pastels rather than the more traditional primary colours. These are back-painted glass panes set within an ivory-coloured case that has brass trims and drawer pulls. The console measures 152cm long, 76cm high and 40cm deep, so it's good for smaller spaces, and costs about €4,570, ex delivery. 4. A fresh perspective

There is a vogue presently towards tall, Chinese cupboard-style shapes that make a strong decorative statement. Peter Ghyczy is a Hungarian whose early work included the 1968 garden egg chair that quickly became a classic. Now in business with his son Felix under the name Ghyczy and based in the Netherlands he continues to make conversation pieces. The new limited edition New Perspective Biri C03 sideboard features 476 polished brass tiles applied to a base made of 150-year-old oak and set on mirror-polished stainless steel legs. The interior is lacquered in turquoise to resemble the Norwegian sea. While it costs from €26,000 it is worth remembering that this 20th-century designer's star remains bright and therefore collectable. 5. Stylish and affordable

The glass doors on this Fabrikor from Ikea make this more of a cabinet than an actual sideboard but it remains one of the most stylish and affordable options on the market. You see it often in the homes of some of the sharpest design minds while trawling online or perusing the glossy pages of design magazines. The two-shelf design comes in two sizes; a single-door tall narrow option in battleship grey, 150cm tall by 57cm wide; and a double-door version in slate blue that is broader and measures 113cm tall by 81cm wide. 6. Inspired by the 1960s

If you prefer strong but silent storage then London-based Fiona McDonald's Valentina is an elegantly low-key option. McDonald has been sourcing antiques for 20 years and recently introduced a Fiona Makes range of classic furniture designs. Inspired by 1960s designs, Valentina is in ebonised walnut with antique brass handles. It measures 150cm long, 50cm deep and 65cm high, from €7,090 and can be custom-made to fit a specific location. Fionamcdonald.com

7. The Rise and Fall...

Ziggy is a brass foil finished starburst-fronted sideboard that is inspired by David Bowie's glam rock persona Ziggy Stardust. Made of mango wood and set on steel hairpin legs it comes with two internal shelves and in two sizes; a tall square shape, 90cm tall, 80cm wide and 40cm deep, about €621, or a long rectangular shape, 75cm tall, 120cm wide and 45cm deep, about €734, from London-based Swoon Editions where there is currently 15 per cent off this best-selling design.
