Saturday (April 23rd) Fonsie Mealy Auctioneers 'History Sale', Gresham Hotel, Dublin. An original copy of the 1916 Proclamation "believed to be the copy which hung in the GPO" and with "guaranteed provenance to Dr James Ryan, medical officer to the GPO Garrison" €150,000 (€100,000-€150,000); an archive relating to Capt Percival Lea-Wilson (who was killed by the IRA during the War of Independence) and his widow, Dr Marie Lea-Wilson, the Dublin doctor who, unbeknowingly, bought the Caravaggio painting that ended up in the National Gallery of Ireland €7,000 (€4,500-€6,500); a Tricolour reputedly flown in Enniscorthy, Co Wexford during the 1916 Rising €5,600 (€1,000-€1,500); keys reputedly found in the burnt-out GPO after the Rising €3,400 (€550-€750). A white linen handkerchief reputedly used as a flag of truce by 1916 rebels in Moore Street and estimated at €5,000-€7,000 failed to sell.
Monday (April 25th) Morgan O'Driscoll's art auction, RDS, Dublin 4. 81 per cent of lots sold. Lot 84, A Kerry Lake by Paul Henry €74,000 (€60,000-€80,000); Lot 90, Colorado Springs by Michael Flatley €42,000 (€30,000-€50,000); Lot 97, Man Crossing the Bog (sketch) by Paul Henry €16,000 (€15,000-€20,000); Lot 3, Jake and the Watering Can by Mark O'Neill €4,200 (€3,000-€5,000). The Hurlers (watercolour) by Louis le Brocquy, estimated at €15,000-€25,000, was withdrawn before the auction.
Tuesday & Wednesday (April 25th & 26th) Sheppard's Irish Auction House, Durrow, Co Laois. 83 per cent of lots sold. An autograph book belonging to a member of staff during the early years of Jammet's Restaurant made €3,600 (€1,500-€2,500) and was bought by the Little Museum of Dublin. The "sleeper" in the sale was a "Chinese blue-and-white dragon decorated bowl", estimated at €1,500-€2,500, which sold for €37,000 to a telephone bidder in Italy. Forthcoming auctions
Sunday (May 1st) Kelly's Hotel, Rosslare Strand, Co Wexford, will host Dolan's Art Auction House annual auction of art and antiques starting at 2pm. Among the paintings are work by Norah McGuinness, Kenneth Webb, Brian Ballard, Mark O'Neill, Arthur Maderson, Charles Harper, Markey Robinson, Frank Egginton, Fergus O'Ryan, Norman Teeling, John Morris and Thelma Mansfield. Some of the paintings depict Co Wexford locations including Summer Slaney by Mark O'Neill (€2,500-€3,500); The Hook Lighthouse by Ivan Sutton (€800-€1,200); Morning Sun, Killinick by Tony Robinson (€280-€350). There's also sculpture, antique furniture, silver, china, rugs and collectible items. Viewing today, Saturday (April 30th) 10am-8pm and tomorrow from 10am- 2pm.
Sunday (May 1st) Hegarty’s Auction Rooms, Bandon, Co Cork. Antiques auction at 3pm to include the contents of Kilcolman Rectory, Enniskeane. An “exceptional” rosewood and ivory inlaid collector’s cabinet (€3,000-€6,000); a Regency Irish library table (€3,000-€5,000); paintings, clocks and jewellery. Viewing today, noon-5pm.
