Bespoke home in Dalkey for €1.65m

Its A3 BER rating means this large house will have low fuel bills

Peter O'Malley left Dublin after studying in Bolton Street and established LOM architecture in London at the age of 28. The company now has a staff of 50 and a client base that includes Forbes top 100 companies.

O’Malley himself has been Dalkey-based for the past decade as his work takes him around the globe.

Many of the buildings LOM Architects design are in the commercial sector and this is evident in O’Malley’s home: essentially it is built like a tank, solid, sturdy and secure. The walls are double the width of most new family homes and Ellington has a BER rating of A3.

“We couldn’t have a letterbox in the front door,” explains O’Malley, “as energy would be lost, and the entire house has been hermetically sealed.”

Dalkey granite dug from the site base was used on the exterior, providing an extra layer of insulation and the house is solar assisted, so new owners will have very low energy bills.

Standing at 271sq m (2,900sq ft) and set over three floors with views of Dublin Bay, Ellington is situated beside the tracks of The Metals, the old tramway which connected Dalkey quarry to Dún Laoghaire harbour.

Inside the large hallway is a solid oak staircase, and oak is the wood of choice for flooring, wardrobes and doors throughout the property.

A large drawingroom with bay window and Lamartine fireplace housing a Boru firebox, leads to the kitchen-cum-diningroom which runs the entire width of the property and has access to the rear southeast-facing garden through two sets of French doors.

The sleek kitchen in warm greys is by Noblessa and combines high-gloss units with blue pearl granite interspersed with stainless steel. The utility has a storage wall in the same high gloss with ample storage for a very large family.

A further room, used by O’Malley as his home office, could also be used as a reception room or playroom for a larger family.

Upstairs over two floors are five spacious bedrooms, all of which are en-suite and those to the front have sea views.

The O'Malleys are in the process of building their dream home – an art deco-style house with a maritime theme – and have placed Ellington, built last year, on the market through estate agent Vincent Finnegan with an asking price of €1.65 million.

This Herculean property, in perfect condition, will suit a large family in search of a well- built architect-designed home just minutes from the popular seaside village.
