John Wilson: Two Italian gems well worth the money

This week we go Italian, with two wines from O'Briens. The Pinot Grigio is a step above the standard offering and well priced at €10.95. The Munus is an unusual blend of old Corvina vines on the Rizzardi family Bardolino Classico estate with some Merlot. The Corvina brings a vibrancy to the wine, the Merlot rich dark fruits. It is aged in large oak barrels. If you want to spend less, the Wildflower Sauvignon Blanc and Wildflower Syrah, from Romania, are great buys at €9 a bottle, also from O'Briens.

This is a very well-priced, clean, refreshing Pinot Grigio. Crisp, zippy grapefruit and pear fruits with good acidity and a dry finish. The perfect aperitif, or drink it with clams or mussels.

Munus 2016, Guerrieri Rizzardi, Rosso Veronese

Supple and rounded with rich black-cherry fruits, dark chocolate and hints of spice. Try it with lamb – either grilled chops or a roast leg. Great value at the price.
