John Wilson: O’Briens French wine sale offers mouth-watering selection

Weekend wines: This all-rounder red has become a favourite chez Wilson

I return to the O’Briens French wine sale this week for two real bargains. The sale finishes at close of business Monday so don’t delay. I was served the Muscadet by a friend last weekend. On a warmish summer evening it was perfect by itself and later with clam linguini.

I mentioned the Syrah in passing two weeks ago. Since then, it has become the house wine chez Wilson. If you enjoy lighter red wines then this outstanding bargain is one to stock up on before the O’Briens French wine sale comes to a close.

Muscadet de Sèvre et Maine, Domaine de la Chauvinère 2020

A very morish crisp refreshing dry wine with mouth-watering pear and apple fruits. Perfect on its own, or lighter seafood dishes. The classic partner is a bowl of moules marinière, ie mussels in white wine, garlic, cream and parsley. €11.95 down from €14.95 from O’Briens.

Syrah 2018/2020 Cave Caves Saint-Désirat, VdP des Collines Rhodaniennes

Both vintages of this wine offer fantastic value for money. Elegant ripe dark cherries and blackberries with a lovely touch of savoury black olives. A good all-rounder to serve with most white meats, charcuterie, and medium-bodied vegetarian dishes. €10.05 down from €15.45 from O’Briens.
