The Met Éireann warning cautions that it will be “very cold tonight, with minimum temperatures of -3 degrees or lower. A sharp to severe frost forming with icy stretches.”

The national forecast is for a dry and calm evening with a widespread sharp frost and icy stretches. Freezing fog is possible, with lowest temperatures of minus 4 to 2 degrees.

In the parts of Leinster’s eastern seaboard not affected by the warning, temperatures may remain at about 3 to 5 degrees.

On Tuesday morning, 15,000 properties were still without power in the wake of the weekend’s damage from Storm Darragh. Many of the homes and businesses affected were in the country’s west, in areas expected to be affected by the latest cold snap.

The longer-term forecast predicts low temperatures for the rest of the week, with lows of minus 3 on Wednesday and minus 1 on Thursday and Friday.

The weekend is expected to be showery, with milder conditions.
