John Wilson: Two bottles to try from O’Briens’ Christmas 2022 line-up

Wines for the Weekend: A Sauvignon Blanc from the Leyda Valley, in Chile, and a red Bordeaux, from France

O’Briens launched the first part of its Christmas line-up this week, with more to follow. All of these wines, including the two below, will be on offer until January.

10 years of Irish Times Food Month

Leyda was one of the first wine companies to explore the Leyda Valley. It was so impressed that it named itself after this cool-climate region of Chile, close to the Pacific Ocean. The Leyda Valley is now recognised as producing some of the finest aromatic white wines, along with some very good Pinot Noir and Syrah.

Château La Rose du Pin is a classic Bordeaux blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. The Cabernet gives the wine structure and tannins; the Merlot provides rounded, smooth fruit. At the offer price it’s great value for money.

Leyda Reserva Sauvignon Blanc 2022, Leyda Valley, €12.95 (down from €14.95)

Vibrant, fresh and aromatic, with zesty lime and ripe green fruits.

Château La Rose du Pin 2019, Bordeaux Supérieur, €14.95 (down from €19.95)

Medium- to full-bodied, with very seductive ripe cassis and some toast wood. Perfect with roast red meats or mushroom dishes.
