Ireland weather: ‘Unsettled’ conditions expected as new year approaches

Met Éireann says weekend will be mainly dry, Monday breezy with rain and New Year’s Eve wet and windy

Irish weather is set to become “unsettled” over the coming days, Met Éireann has said, as the countdown to the new year gets under way.

Saturday will remain mainly dry with sunny spells. Highest temperatures will range from 8 to 11 degrees, accompanied by light to moderate southwest winds.

Saturday night will be dry with clear spells apart from the odd shower across western and northern counties. It is expected to be colder than recent nights with lowest temperatures of 2 to 6 degrees, rising again by morning apart from in the south. Moderate southwesterly winds will freshen towards morning.

Sunday is set to be dry and breezy with isolated showers mainly in the north and west, with highest temperatures 8 to 11 degrees.

It will be breezy on Sunday night with rain in the northwest and scattered showers across Atlantic counties. Lowest temperatures will be in the region of 5 to 9 degrees.

Monday will remain breezy, with outbreaks of rain across Ulster and Connacht, possibly becoming heavier throughout the day. It is forecast to be mostly dry elsewhere with sunny spells and highest temperatures of 9 to 12 degrees in fresh to strong southwest winds.

It will become mostly cloudy on Monday night with outbreaks of rain becoming more widespread and lowest temperatures of 8 to 11 degrees.

New Year’s Eve (Tuesday) will be wet and windy with outbreaks of rain becoming lighter and patchier throughout the day.

Fresh to strong southwesterly winds will moderate throughout the day, increasing strong again overnight with highest temperatures of 10 to 12 degrees.

There is some uncertainty around the forecast for next Wednesday (New Year’s Day) with current indications suggesting it will turn very windy with widespread outbreaks of rain.
